Sir Anthony Farquhar Buzzard was born on June 28, 1935, in Surrey, England, into a family with a distinguished naval heritage. He is the son of Rear-Admiral Sir Anthony Wass Buzzard, 2nd Baronet—who served as the Director of Naval Intelligence from 1951 to 1954—and Margaret Elfreda Knapp. His grandfather, Sir Edward Farquhar Buzzard, was a Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University. Anthony inherited the baronetcy following his father's passing in 1972. He has a younger brother, Timothy McDonnell Buzzard (1939–2019), and a younger sister, Gillian Margaret Buzzard (b. 1944).
Sir Anthony was educated at Oxford University, earning an MA in Modern Languages (French and German), and later attended Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, where he received his Master’s in Theology. He also holds a diploma in Biblical Hebrew from the University of London and an honorary Ph.D. As a biblical scholar and Unitarian Christian theologian, Buzzard served as a professor on the faculty of Atlanta Bible College for 35 years until his retirement.
His spiritual journey began in the Church of England during the 1930s and 40s. While at Oxford, he joined Herbert W.
